Did a 700-year-old Cathar prophecy come true? According to legend, the last Cathar perfect, Guilhèm Bélibaste, was burned alive in 1321 after declaring that “in seven hundred years, the laurel will be green again, and the good men and women will return.” Seven hundred years later brings us to 2021. But another version of the prophecy points to 1244 — and, remarkably, towards the rediscovery of the lost Gnostic texts of Nag Hammadi in 1945.
In this episode of World Astrology Report, I explore the strange history of the Cathars, the meaning of the “green laurel,” and the possible return of Gnosticism and gnosis to the modern world.
We’ll travel from the Albigensian Crusade and the fall of Montségur to the discovery of the Nag Hammadi library, before looking at the astrology connecting these periods across centuries.
At the heart of the story are two great astrological cycles.
First is the Jupiter-Saturn cycle and our transition into a new Age of Air. The previous Age of Air encompassed the persecution of the Cathars and the medieval Inquisition. Go back another Air cycle and we find Christianity defining orthodoxy while ancient Gnostic and pagan traditions were being suppressed.
Then there is the roughly 500-year Pluto-Neptune cycle. Our current cycle began with conjunctions in Gemini in 1891–92 — during a remarkable period of renewed interest in Gnosticism, esotericism and alternative spirituality. When Pluto and Neptune reached their first major aspect decades later, the lost library of Nag Hammadi emerged from the Egyptian desert.
So was the prophecy really preserved for seven centuries? Was it a later invention? And does that ultimately matter?
Because whether or not the legend is literally true, the historical and astrological pattern behind it raises a much larger question: are we living through the return of gnosis?
