In this video, I build and test a forgotten 1917-era cooling method sometimes used by hoboes and outdoorsmen to help keep food cooler without ice. Using nothing more than a container, dirt, water, and evaporation, this primitive “dirt cooler” acts much like a swamp cooler and can lower temperatures surprisingly well in the right conditions.
This old off-grid cooling trick dates back at least to 1917 and may be much older. During the Great Depression and long before modern refrigeration, simple evaporative cooling methods like this helped travelers, campers, and hoboes preserve food while living on the move.
