Critical thinking had Scott Walsh (from the @Scott Walsh YouTube Channel) making changes to his channel.
Here are some items we may discuss:
Build videos
o Build videos are dead in the traditional sense - or otherwise a gamble
o Throwing stuff at the wall and seeing what sticks
o “I need to build this, so I’m going to make a video about it because someone might like to see it” – Is this the wrong attitude?
Malecki-style videos
o Pure entertainment
o The thought was to show more personality on camera with more authenticity.
o Fun, goofy, quick, spastic – editing for a younger or less patient demographic
o This wasn’t right for the woodworking space, at least not at my level although it does work for Malecki
o At least the build videos provide some value to the audience. Do these videos provide value at all?
o These videos can be time-intensive in the editing stage since there was no prep-work and no script. Had to cobble something together in the edit.
- Instructional videos
o The first couple did not do well – stick with something for long enough to
know it is or isn’t working
o Retaining elements of my previous styles (or familiar styles in the
woodworking space) keeps a sense of familiarity in my videos, even if I pivot.
▪ Keep the ‘build’, but maybe in the background, or “B-story”
▪ Keep the goofiness, try and keep the authenticity
o Value packed content
o Broad and familiar topics while packaging it with a unique paradigm.
o Everything is scripted in advanced
How to know when to pivot and make a change?
- When the numbers don’t show growth
o Don’t blame it on the audience, don’t blame it on YouTube, or the almighty
“Algorithm”.
- Comments
o Don’t ignore the negative comments, whether said constructively or not,
there is an underlying truth to how the commenter felt about your content
How does video style impact productivity?
- Filming a build-video or an entertainment-style video without a plan in advance can make a nightmare in the editing.
- Preparing a script for an instructional video will make a much more efficient filming process and editing process. It does make more time up front but overall it’s
quicker.
How video style impacts authenticity
- It’s much harder to show personality when doing a voice over for a build video - Jason Hibbs does this very well. I don’t think I did this very well
- It’s hard to show personality when reading from a teleprompter in an instructional
video
