We heard you in the comments! In Part 3 of our legendary stereo brands series, we’re taking a look at four more names that helped shape the history of home audio: Pioneer, Realistic, SAE (Scientific Audio Electronics), and Soundesign.
Some of these brands disappeared completely. One survived—but not quite in the form we remember. And one made a comeback that genuinely surprised us.
We’ll revisit the glory days of Pioneer’s monster receivers, including the legendary SX-1010, SX-1250 and SX-1980, and look at how a company that helped define the receiver wars eventually shifted away from the home stereo market.
Then there’s Realistic, Radio Shack’s house brand. It may not have had the audiophile prestige of Pioneer, Marantz or Sansui, but for millions of people, a Realistic receiver, turntable or cassette deck was their first real stereo system—and some of that equipment was much better than people remember.
We also dig into SAE—Scientific Audio Electronics, the American high-power audio company founded by Morris Kessler. SAE built serious amplifiers for serious listeners, nearly disappeared, and then pulled off something almost unheard of in vintage audio: the original founder came back and revived the brand.
Finally, we talk about Soundesign, a company that dominated affordable all-in-one stereo systems for decades. These weren’t designed to compete with McIntosh or high-end separates. They were designed to be affordable, fun, and—quite often—the first stereo a kid ever owned. For some of us, that makes them every bit as important to audio history.
Along the way, we talk about the 1970s receiver wars, vintage stereo equipment, Radio Shack nostalgia, monster receivers, classic hi-fi, affordable stereo systems, American-made amplifiers, and why so many beloved audio companies eventually disappeared.
