Jewel the pig was shot to death by an officer, as animal rescuers watched in horror. Now activists are demanding accountability.
On Sept 20, animal rescuers in Door County, Wisconsin contacted the police and requested assistance in securing a stray pig wandering on the streets. The officers promised to tranquilize the pig and were told a trailer was just 20 minutes away. But within 33 seconds of seeing the pig, an officer instead pulled out a rifle and shot her to death.
Direct Action Everywhere Milwaukee and other groups are now demanding an investigation – and for the officer to be fired or charged. The unjustifiable killing of an animal is a crime in Wisconsin. Killing a gentle pig, moments before rescue, is as unjustifiable as it gets.
Call the Door County Sheriff at 920-746-2400 and ask for an investigation of the incident and for Deputy Nathan Daoust to be charged with animal cruelty.
