In this episode of Better Human Better Dog, I step into one of the most intense situations I can face: two dogs from the same family who can no longer coexist.
Ricky and Bronnie were once inseparable. Brothers who lived together, played together, and trusted each other. But now, they can’t even be in the same room without a violent fight. The situation has become so extreme that the family has turned their home into a “maximum security” system of gates and barriers, living in constant fear of what might happen next.
But when I look at this case, I don’t just see two dogs fighting.
I see a household driven by fear.
Ricky is operating from protection. Brownie is living in defense. And the humans are caught in a cycle of anxiety—anticipating the next fight instead of preventing it. That energy keeps the tension alive.
So I changed the environment.
I take the dogs out of the home and into a neutral space, surrounded by calm, balanced dogs. And that’s where something powerful happens. Without the pressure and fear, both dogs begin to relax. They follow direction. They walk side by side again.
The dogs are ready.
But the real challenge is the humans.
I push the owners to confront their fear. To stop reacting and start leading. To walk the dogs together calmly, to lead from the front, and to guide behavior instead of anticipating conflict.
At the ranch, the transformation is undeniable.
The brothers coexist.
They share space.
They drink water side by side.
But when we return home, the truth reveals itself.
The fear comes back—and so does the fight.
This is the lesson I want you to understand.
Dogs don’t hold onto fear the way humans do.
But if you don’t let go of your fear, your dogs can’t let go of theirs.
True rehabilitation doesn’t start with the dog.
It starts with your state of mind.

Ricky y Bronnie antes eran inseparables.

Toman agua lado a lado.
