Thexder is a game released in 1995 for Windows 95, as the name suggests. It's a basic platform-shooter: you control a robot named Thexder, whose mission is to restore order on 10 different planets with 5 levels each, the last one being a boss battle. Your goal in each level is to find the exit portal to advance to the next one. In the boss levels the portal doesn't appear until you destroy the boss. You get a variety of weapons along the way, like lasers, fireballs, missiles, bombs, all kinds of stuff. The most common weapon is the laser. It's not very powerful, but it has a rapid fire rate, so most of the time you'll be using it as your primary weapon. In the later stages some enemies get so strong they are virtually immune to the laser, so you'll need something with a little more punch, like fireballs, grenades or missiles. These are a lot more powerful, but you also come across them far less often, so use them sparingly and don't blast everything you see with them - you will need them in the later stages ! Thexder can also transform into 3 different forms: the regular robot, a fighter jet and a tank. The form you're in also affects which weapons you can use. The robot can jump and use all weapons (except the fan-fire laser). The fighter jet can fly (obviously...), enabling you to fly over hazardous areas and reach higher ground. The jet is the fastest and fires the laser by default. You can drop bombs and use the fan-fire laser in this form, but you can't shoot rockets or fireballs. The laser always fires straight ahead from the tip of the jet, so aiming automatically depends on the angle you're going: up, down, left, right or diagonal. Some enemies only try to shoot you down when you're in this jet mode and don't attack otherwise. Also, you can't stop moving while in jet form - you fly continuously until you hit an obstacle or an enemy, at which point you'll automatically switch back to walking mode. Finally, the tank: you can only use the 2 types of bombs when in this form, but you can also dig through certain terrain. The tank is the slowest but also the strongest form, as it is immune to damage from certain enemies, including electric fences, which normally drain your energy in only a few seconds ! The tank also has the lowest profile, so you can only pass through some narrow gaps in tank form. There are a lot of hazards in the game, but no instant-death traps. The only real way you can die is the traditional way: when your life bar is drained all the way. Some enemies take away more energy than others upon contact, while others won't do any damage at all if you're in tank mode. Aside from the regular enemies, other hazards are the electric fences, land mines, lava and acid pools. The electric fences won't harm Thexder in tank form, but mines, lava and acid will ! To go through an acid or lava pool without getting hurt, you need to equip the suitable armor from the "Equipment" window, in the form of 4 different colored shields - the lava and acid armor prevent damage from lava and acid respectively, the blue "shot armor" prevents damage from enemies and the yellow "mega armor" turns you invincible - nothing can harm you while you have it equipped, no matter how strong. The amours only last for 30 seconds and you don't find them lying everywhere, so use them sparingly, especially the mega armor - save at least 2 for the last boss battle - you'll need them for sure ! Don't equip an armor just because you see a small pool of acid or lava, because once you enable an armor you can't turn it back off - you have to wait for it to run out, so once you turn it on, it's gone, even if you need it for just 3 seconds ! Let's look at the other equipment you come across: the jet pack makes you go very fast in all 3 forms, but this is not useful at all because it makes Thexder very uncontrollable (one slight tap of the arrow keys sends you flying into the nearest enemy !). Only once in the entire game you absolutely have to use it to pass over a conveyor belt running in the opposite direction, but otherwise I don't see why you'd ever use it ! The "hover pack" allows the fighter jet to hover in place when you let go of the arrow keys, since it normally flies continuously until you hit a barrier. The "jump boots" are self explanatory: they enable Thexder to jump higher in robot form, but what's the use since you can turn into a rocket and fly instead ? Now, what about the gameplay ? Well, it's fun as all hell: it's addicting, fast paced, it's fun blasting sh!t, and you'll surely be sad when it ends, which is what the game suffers from: relatively low number of levels, compared to the entertainment you get out of them (should have been at least 20) ! Try it out !
