Some of the world's largest telescopes (also known as ""megatelescopes"") reside in the Atacama desert in northern Chile. In this clip from episode one of Dispatches from The Well, Kmele Foster takes a trip to the oldest desert in the world to tour ALMA Observatory and the antennas it uses to study the other side of the universe. These giant pieces of observation equipment require very specific conditions in order to function properly, including highly-controlled enviornments and extremely low temperatures.
