This video was released early because it was partially time-sensitive. A new bill to ban prone restraint and seclusion was moving to a vote in the IL House the next day. Note: "Quiet rooms" are not the same thing as letting someone who is overwhelmed decide they need some time in a calm and quiet space, maybe a sensory room, or whatever. Here, these rooms called "quiet rooms," "blue rooms," "timeout spaces," "isolation rooms," are small rooms (some even more like closets) that children are forcibly taken to, put inside alone, and not allowed out until the adult deems it safe. These are only legal in some states, and are meant only as an absolute last measure when someone is harming themselves or others. The padded rooms are empty with nothing to do. There is a person on the outside looking through a window in the door to write down every action, yet records show they continually ignore the needs of the child inside. Instead of being released from this room the moment they are no longer violent, many are stuck in there for long amounts of time and at the whim of whoever put them in there. Many times, the child wasn't even really a harm to themselves or others, and workers escalated the situation. These tend to happen in conjunction with different types of restraints, including prone restraints.
Since the release of Sia's movie, there's been more conversation around prone restraint and why it's an issue. Today, we're going to look at it a bit more, as well as the use of restraint and seclusion in schools. We're also going to look at three groups that handle individuals with disabilities (including one that deals exclusively with students who have autism as a primary diagnosis) who are fighting to KEEP prone restraint and seclusion use in Illinois.
