In this video, I will expose the worst motorcycle travel mistakes that you can make, I will also give you a few tips on how to avoid them.
I guess that you will expect me to repeat some of the classic advice that you have already read on the internet, but no! As usual, I will try to show you the biggest picture and I really hope that you will be able to understand it and eventually improve your future trips.
1. Wrong Motorcycle
This is the most expensive mistake that you can make. You can easily spend the money for an around-the-world trip on the wrong motorcycle and finish with an expensive bijou that only stays in your or the dealer's garage.
Classic phrases like "you buy a motorcycle with heart not with brain" are usually made by people with a lot of money and zero interest in motorcycle traveling.
Buying a motorcycle that already has reliability issues, because you like how it looks, or what features it has is the same as getting married to a girl that cheating all the time. It will be much worse after a few years. I am sorry about the analogy, but this is what came to my mind. I hope that you get the idea. Solution: Buy a well-known brand with proven reliability and easy maintenance. Nothing more to say.
2. Wrong engine size
Nowadays, 300, or 450cc motorcycles are very popular and they promise an unforgettable experience, right? Fair enough, they might even be delivered, even though it depends on you, not on motorcycle, but what about the longevity?
How long this 300c will last in the hands of a serious traveler? Especially if you are a big guy and like to twist a lot. How many bumps the stock suspension will last? When you know that it is designed for an average rider of 70-80kg.
For example, the Hondas that we rode in South America survived the journey, but we had to be very gentle and I was there with a professional mechanic. Even so, I cannot bet that they will last the same trip once again.
Every engine and suspension has some limits and you cannot go over them. No one ever canceled the laws of physics. In serious use, it will fall apart for 2 maximum 3 long trips.
Will you buy a motorcycle that will last only 3 trips? I definitely won't but you might be different. Remember about the girl that cheat all the time. Some people love pain!
Of course, many will defend or try to debunk this with new technologies, better build quality, and so on, but we know that all new models are made to last just a few years, ideally the warranty period.
Solution: Buy a motorcycle that will have the potential to hold at least 5 years and if you're lucky it will last 10 and more. This means enough cc and not so many H.P.
