In Gvava Peul, Mauritania, the community has come together to make sure children at school have access to nutritious meals every day.

Nutritious school meals improve children’s overall health and nutrition, helping them focus in class and perform better at school. School feeding empowers girls' education and reduces child marriage. It acts as an incentive for families to enroll and keep their children in school longer.

When school meals are linked with farmers, local food value chains can be strengthened and livelihoods improved. Locally-produced school meals can include building school gardens, installing grain mills, or women’s groups managing herds. All together, this contributes to the production and consumption of more diversified food. At the same time school feeding activities present an entry point to sensitize about gardening, nutrition and the environment.
