The Tarot of the Master is a fascinating historical tarot deck originally created in 1893 by the Italian artist and scholar Giovanni Vacchetta. Inspired by older Italian and Marseille traditions, the deck sits in an intriguing space between historic pip-style tarot and the more illustrated systems that came later. Its artwork carries that distinctive late 19th-century academic feel, reflecting Vacchetta’s background as a sculptor and historian.
In this video, I’ll be sharing a modern reprint from the Tarot Oracle store, taking a close look at the cards, artwork, and overall production quality. I’ll also be comparing it side by side with the well-known Tarot of the Master published by Lo Scarabeo, exploring differences in colour, card stock, print clarity, and overall feel.
We’ll also touch on some of the deck’s historical quirks, including its Marseille influences and the unique details woven throughout the Minor Arcana.
