The Diocese of Antigonish recently closed a plethora of churches and parishes in Nova Scotia. Some beautiful old churches have, unfortunately, been casualties of this process, demolished because the Diocese claimed they were no longer financially viable.
St. Alphonsus Church in New Waterford is one of the most beautiful and historically significant churches on Cape Breton Island, perhaps in the entire province of Nova Scotia, and the Diocese of Antigonish seems bound and determined to take it down. They're in a downright hurry, in fact.
Well, as the old saying goes, haste makes waste. If they hadn't been in such a rush to tear down all these churches they might've been more apt to follow canon law properly.
Apparently they didn't.
If we strike while the iron is hot, it may yet be possible to save St. Alphonsus, and other churches facing similar fates...
