Many people believe there were no enslaved people in the UK. It's true that the act of carrying out slavery in England was illegal for centuries before the slave trade was finally banned two hundred years ago, but there are newspaper ads, gravestones, and paintings that tell us that although slaves and slavery were much rarer, they were still sadly to be found in the UK.
