Trust in news overall sits at 37% (Reuters Institute 2026) its lowest recorded level.

A large share of the population (especially outside the big-city media class) feels that skeptical, non-aligned, common-sense reporting that challenges official narratives is scarce. When almost every major outlet frames stories the same way on immigration, climate policy, COVID measures, energy, crime, etc., it starts to feel like a monoculture rather than a marketplace of ideas.

Jim and Iain interviewed an old school journalist to ask WHAT HAPPENED to Canada?

A nation that is basically become a journalism desert.

Ian's career includes three main stops along the way as a journalist,
environmental activist and as a back room political advisor.

His first stop in journalism was as a Music Columnist for the Ottawa Journal,
the Ottawa Citizen and CJOH TV

He then became an environmental activist as National co-ordinator of 106
groups across Canada who were fighting against the expansion of Nuclear
Power Plants

In that role he was noticed by Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau who appointed
Ian to his National Policy Committee.

That started a career in politics as a senior advisor to Federal and Provincial
Cabinet Ministers and the Leader of the Opposition in Ontario who later
became Premier of the Province.

Then it was back to Journalism as a political columnist for 9 years for a
Toronto Star publication

At the same time he served as Chair of the Canadian News Hall of Fame and
as a Member of the Canadian News Paper Awards Committee
