Theodor W. Adorno, made a name for himself above all as a philosopher and sociologist. He studied composition with Bernhard Sekles and Alban Berg and piano with Eduard Steuermann. His musical writings are of extraordinary importance for musicology, music criticism and the history of composition. He understood artistic production as a form of knowledge. Nevertheless, composing took on a subordinate rank in Adorno's lifelong intellectual production. Nevertheless, Adorno's artistic work would be missed as a mere pastime, quite apart from the fact that the master himself was one of the harshest critics of the term "hobby". Like Schönberg, Berg and Webern, Adorno set the emphasis on contemporary poetry of the "expressionist decade".
