Kirchner was born in 1823 in Neukirchen and lived 79 years. His set of 6 Caprices was released not earlier than 1877. I think Theodor Kirchner is still quite known nowadays, maybe because of his huge output: He composed more than 1000 compositions - solely counted for the piano. Making so much music, there are probably few of them, which got "famous", and therefore made him more known even today.
He got to know Robert and Clara Schumann, and Mendelssohn Bartholdy, which can also be heard in certain similarities in their music. Also, his friend Johannes Brahms supported him financially.
