The history of the German Air Force during the Second World War is a complex tapestry of brilliant, erratic innovation ultimately crushed by strategic arrogance and overwhelming industrial might. In the autumn of 1940, the German war machine appeared invincible, with nations across Europe falling under occupation. Yet beneath the surface, a frantic technological scramble was underway. The looming prospect of invading Great Britain birthed massive engineering projects like the Messerschmitt Gigant, a fabric-covered transport glider capable of carrying tanks and artillery. Designed by Professor Willy Messerschmitt, this colossal aircraft required a perilous triple tow from three Messerschmitt 110 heavy fighters just to get airborne, an arrangement known as the Troika Schlepp. Despite its ingenuity, the glider proved disastrous in operation, causing unacceptable chaos en route to the Eastern Front.
As the war progressed, both Allied and Axis forces poured resources into secret weapons. The British tested everything from the Capoc Landing Stage to the giant Panjandrum, a self-propelled Catherine wheel crammed with explosives. Perhaps most famously, Barnes Wallis developed the bouncing bomb, leading to the Highball designed for Mosquito squadrons. Less known to history is the German equivalent, the rocket-powered Kurt bouncing bomb, which functioned on the exact same principle but lacked the crucial backspin of its British counterpart. The Germans also developed anti-shipping weapons like the Henschel 293, an early guided missile controlled via radio command from a parent Heinkel aircraft, and midget submarines like the Marder.
This documentary meticulously analyzes the development and ultimate failure of these extraordinary machines. Through beautifully upscaled, restored, and colorized vintage archival footage, the sheer scale of wartime engineering is brought back to life in stunning detail. Viewers can clearly examine the rare footage of the Capoc trials, the Highball drops, and the staggering operations of the Gigant. The realities of the conflict, driven by brilliant engineers and fraught with fatal bureaucratic mismanagement, showcase an air force that relied on tactical victories while completely ignoring the looming threat of long-term strategic warfare.
