Colleges and universities are fine, but there's always more to learn about a topic after you get your degree. Whether you're an author or an aspiring author, you can improve your skills by studying books on craft and lifestyle far better than you could by just taking a couple semesters of creative writing at your local community college.
The Writer's Bookshelf: Recommended References and Writing Resources is a series devoted to those books on the writing craft and writing life that I (a writer) have learned from and would recommend to anyone who's looking to tell a great story. These books continue to live on my bookshelf as they have been valuable to me as a resource.
This introductory video orients you to the series and gives you an overview why it's important to have a reference library on hand (even with so many YouTube videos to watch).
Series Overview:
Season 1 will contain 16 episodes that release every Friday at 10am EST until the end of 2020. Season 2 (if there's a demand for it) will debut sometime in March 2021 and cover a new theme.
Season 1 will focus primarily on books about the writing life and story structure, with a few all-purpose books along the way.
Each episode will have a link to the book's store page on Amazon.
Anyone who wants to share their experiences with these books or links to their blogs, showcasing what they've learned from the readings can do so in the comments.
If you have a book you'd like me to talk about in a future video (if I have it on my bookshelf), be sure to let me know in the comments.
December 2020 Update: There will be four bonus episodes between seasons. The first will debut on January 1, 2021. The others will debut the first Friday of each month, with the final bonus airing the second Friday in March.
Don't forget to like and subscribe and do all the things that YouTubers tell you to do.
