In May of 1855, in Iraq, a flotilla which was carrying over two hundred crates from ancient cities like Babylon, Nimrud, and Dur Sharrukin, was attacked by bandits and sank. Only twenty eight crates were ever recovered. There was no record of what was loaded onto the ships and barges, making this the worst archaeological disaster of all time.
