This is bad, my friend. We have little choice but to flee our home. The Russians are coming and they will no doubt kill us if we stay, luckily we have a way out! It’s our old friend, Wilhelm Gustloff. I do hope it won’t get too crowded, she may be a large ship, but she’s not Europa large… Oh well, we’ll manage. It is war after all.

Today is the 80th anniversary of the sinking of the German refugee ship MV Wilhelm Gustloff at the hands of the Soviet submarine S-13. Out of the estimated 10,582 occupants onboard, well over 9,000 of them perished.
This is her story, in the style of a Caretaker Project….
