Some long forgotten memories to shake up, the winter cruise in late 1938 to early 1939 onboard the General Von Steuben, or as we knew her then the Steuben. A fine liner, and an even finer cruise ship indeed, a very literal example of a phoenix from the ashes. A shame that it’s always the prettiest ships that never last afloat in the end…
Today is the 80th anniversary of the sinking of the German refugee ship SS General Von Steuben (or simply Steuben) at the hands of the Soviet submarine S-13. Out of the estimated 5,200 occupants onboard, well over 4,000 of them perished.
