One project I’ve always wanted to do on the channel is going out into the field and documenting a fossil dig for everyone to enjoy. Showing you all the hardships and trials Paleontologists face everyday in order to preserve these fragmented pieces of natural history. While also teaching you about the animals that used to live on this planet.
Well in May of 2024, I was finally able to make that a reality! With the help of my friends from the other members of the Fossil Nerd Adventure Team I was able to collect enough footage while on our trip to the White River Formation in northwest Nebraska to put together this Paleo Analysis special presentation!
The White River Formation covers a huge span of the midwest United States and has layers that are dated to the Eocene, Oligocene, Miocene and Pliocene. But where we go is mostly dated to the Late Eocene/Oligocene. A time when the world was in turmoil as the forests of the Eocene were starting to recede, and mammals were taking strange new forms. Like the giant beast Megacerops who looked like a rhino but wasn’t, “false sabertooth cat” Nimravids, and a terrifying pig-like beast called Archaeotherium, which despite looking like a pig is actually more like a predatory land hippo!
