The country has had plenty of route numbering systems - National Routes, National Highways, State Routes, Freeway Routes, Metroads, Tourist Drives - and now, Alphanumerics. And yet, for the most part, Aussies don't refer to these routes in everyday language. The reasons why are fascinating, and uniquely Australian.
