The origin of the Weeping Angels is way creepier than you think.

In 2007, Steven Moffat gave us Doctor Who’s scariest episode, Blink. And just like that, the Weeping Angels became nightmare fuel for an entire generation.

But the story behind them? Even worse.

It all started on a family holiday, when Moffat stumbled across a locked, abandoned graveyard with a sign warning of an “unsafe structure within.” Naturally, he went in anyway.

Inside, he found a lone weeping angel statue.

Years later, he returned with his son…

…and it was gone.

Same graveyard. Same warning sign. No statue.

So next time you’re watching Blink and trying not to blink, remember this:

The Weeping Angels weren’t just imagined.
They were inspired by something real… that disappeared.
