The Wayunki is a truly unique overtone modulation instrument that bridges the worlds of ambient music, meditation, sound healing, and intuitive musical exploration.
In this video, we explore the rich sonic possibilities of the Wayunki and demonstrate how its haunting, harmonic tones can be shaped using nothing more than the human mouth and imagination.
The Wayunki is played by striking its aluminum reeds with the included wooden and silicone mallet. At the opposite end of the instrument is a mouthpiece that allows you to frequency modulate the sound, creating the instrument's signature "wah wah" vocal-like effect. By changing the shape of the mouth, tongue, jaw, and oral cavity, different overtones naturally emerge and become amplified, allowing you to sculpt the harmonic spectrum in real time.
The result is an incredibly expressive instrument that can be played both technically and intuitively. While there is fascinating acoustic science behind overtone resonance, the greatest discoveries often happen simply by listening, experimenting, and allowing your creativity to guide the experience.
Beyond striking the reeds, the Wayunki offers many additional playing techniques. It can be gently moved or rotated through the air to create chorus- and phaser-like effects, or fitted with its ambient chime extension, allowing the instrument to produce soft, continuous soundscapes through gentle movement alone. Multiple Wayunkis can also be played together to create rich layers of evolving harmonics.
Originally created in 2018, the Wayunki was born from a vision to create an entirely new sound experience—one that invites deep listening, relaxation, meditation, ceremony, and healing. Its gentle, hypnotic voice has found its way into sound therapy sessions, live performances, sacred ceremonies, and ambient music around the world.
Whether you're a musician, sound healer, meditation practitioner, or simply someone who loves discovering unusual instruments, the Wayunki opens a doorway into an entirely new relationship with sound.
