ℹ️Sometimes the journey pauses—whether you want it to or not.
On this stage of our Via di Francesco, plans changed fast after Michelle took a fall on a stair and strained her knee. Instead of walking, we made the call to take a taxi to Spoleto for an unexpected rest day and a bit of recovery (and yes… some much-needed physical therapy).
While Michelle rested, Brian set out solo to explore one of Umbria’s most underrated historic towns—and it did not disappoint.
From the ingenious moving walkways that save your legs on steep climbs, to wandering through ancient streets and landmarks like the Roman amphitheater, the fortress of Rocca Albornoziana, the iconic Ponte delle Torri, and the stunning Duomo di Spoleto—home to one of only two known letters written by St. Francis of Assisi—this town is packed with history at every turn.
Spoleto also comes alive each summer with its famous Festival dei Due Mondi, blending music, art, and culture in a truly unique way (and to think, we only missed it by a few weeks)!
And of course… the food. Because this is Umbria, and “fantastic” doesn’t quite cover it.
Not every day on pilgrimage goes as planned—but sometimes the detours turn into unforgettable experiences.
