This is a katana I call “The Way of Change.” The blade is done by highly regarded American craftsmen who specialize in Japanese swords. I bought the sword in an unfinished state from a collector that had a couple blades from Bob Engnath. Josiah Boomershine did the polishing work and Habaki. I bought the fittings on eBay from a seller who had a listing I had been watching for years. The fittings were made by Patrick Hastings many years ago. The theme of the fittings dictated the rest of the sword. The mount was done by the Man in Black. Black silk, aged samegawa, gloss black saya with lily pad and tadpole artwork.
The tadpole and frog has a number of meanings and many overlap in different cultures. Transformation is the one that stood out to me. Sword arts are transformative, they push you to change, they demand you be better. This is the story that stood out to me. I think it is a practitioner's blade and is well suited to a person seeking to improve.
