At the onset of Napoleon Bonaparte's Russian Campaign he selected a large 18-foot block of Italian marble to be carved into a victory urn for one of his palaces. After his defeat, the Grand Duke of Tuscany presented it to the Prince Regent, who had it carved into the Waterloo Vase.

Today it rests in Buckingham Palace Gardens as a monument to Napoleon's hubris.
