This documentary explores the lives and legends of Rurik the Varangian, Charlemagne and Kenneth MacAlpin—three figures traditionally associated with the foundations of powerful medieval realms. From the river routes of the early Rus to the imperial courts of the Franks and the war-torn kingdoms of Scotland, each man rose in a different world and ruled by different means.
We examine their ancestry, military campaigns, political alliances and lasting legacies, while separating later legend from what the historical evidence can actually tell us. Were they heroic founders, ruthless conquerors, or symbols created by the kingdoms that came after them?
