The film is about a young man, Ask, who has just arrived in Ripa. He has travelled all the way from Haithabu (Hedeby), where he was a slave. As a reward for saving his owners life, he was given his freedom and chose to travel north to start a new life in Ripa.
The exhausted stranger is met by disapproving looks from the tradespeople as he wanders across the marketplace looking for work. Finally, in Ripa town the shoemaker's family asks him inside, offers him food and a place to sleep. In the evening when all the family is gathered around the fireplace, Ask tells about Haithabu, a big harbour where large ships carrying precious stones, silk, spices, furs and other exotic goods land.
The following morning, the shoemaker has put in a good word for Ask, and the master builder employs him as day-labourer. Not everyone in the workshop is thrilled about that. In fact, the joiner and the apprentices immediately start bullying the stranger who happens to be a good worker. Two guards suddenly show up with the order to escort Ask to the Thing-hall where the Earl of Ripa is waiting. News travel fast and the Earl is curious about the stranger from Haithabu. He asks Ask to give a truthful account of the grand port in the south.
The Earl of Ripa is clearly engaged in the development of his town and is inspired by what he is hearing. He sends for the master builder and orders him to construct a similar harbour in Ripa. What is more, to everyone's surprise he demands that Ask will be working as a consultant on the project.
This film was made entirely in Ribe VikingeCenter featuring just one professional actor. The rest of the cast are the Viking interpreters in Ribe VikingeCenter and the students at the Lustrupholm School of Production.
