Remember when vinyl records were a thing of the past? Today, they are making a huge comeback- transforming from obsolete relics to the best-selling physical format for recorded music today. 💿

But why are people flocking back to this seemingly outdated, clunky format in our digital age?🤔

Carleton Communication and Media Studies Prof. Josh Greenberg explains the comeback of vinyl 👇

1. Marketing & Nostalgia 💭
Physical records today are a perfect blend of marketing and our cultural love for nostalgia. From TV shows to ads, vinyl is everywhere, feeding our desire for a tangible connection to the past. It’s not just about the music; it’s about the experience—the feel, the look, and even the smell of vinyl records.

2. Sound and Identity 🎧
Vinyl isn’t just a medium; it’s a statement. For audiophiles, the sound quality is unparalleled—warmer, richer, more authentic than digital. Collecting and playing vinyl is also a way to express identity, a ritualistic act that says something about who we are and what we value.

3. A Social Experience 👥
Vinyl brings people together. Whether listening alone or sharing records with friends, vinyl creates community and connection. It’s about the stories behind the music, the memories of buying that first album, and the joy of discovering old favourites. In an age where everything is digital and fleeting, vinyl offers a lasting, sensory-rich experience that connects us to the past and to each other.
