The video game industry is facing its ultimate reckoning—the Video Game Apocalypse is here. Sony has officially announced the end of physical disc production for all new PlayStation games starting January 2028, effectively killing physical media for the PS6 era and beyond. Microsoft is following suit with moves toward a disc-less future, and Rockstar's all-digital release of GTA 6 is set to accelerate this shift across the entire industry.
In this video, I break down what this means for gamers: the death of game ownership, collecting, resale markets, and preservation. No more shelves full of cases, no more physical backups, and complete reliance on digital licenses that companies can revoke or delist at any time. Is this the end of an era for console gaming as we know it? Or just inevitable "progress" that prioritizes corporate profits over consumer rights?
From skyrocketing digital prices with no cost savings passed on, to the loss of second-hand markets and the risks of server shutdowns— this could doom physical media forever and fundamentally change how we buy, play, and own games.
What do you think? Will you buy a disc-less PS6? Drop your thoughts in the comments!
