Productivity gains from any major process change often follow the J curve. You’ll experience a dip in productivity before the gains materialize. As Nathen Harvey, lead of the DORA research program, explained to Sam Newman in their fireside chat at the recent Infrastructure & Ops Superstream, AI is no different.

Nathen singled out one driver that is specific to AI: the verification tax. If you've 10x-ed your ability to generate code without doing anything to scale your ability to verify it, you haven't solved a problem. You've just created a bigger one. In this clip, Nathen shares some of DORA's data AI trust to make the point that investing in verification is what determines whether the productivity gains developers reporting actually continue through production.
