In 1931, five young Hawaiian men were wrongfully charged of raping the wife of a U.S. Navy officer. In what became known as the Massie trials, the case was declared a mistrial after the jury was unable to reach a verdict, and the men were released. On January 8, 1932—92 years ago today—the family of the accuser then kidnapped and murdered one of the accused men, a Native Hawaiian boxer named Joseph Kahahawai.
