Fairies, ghosts, enchanted forests, jousts, courtly love, and, of course, unicorns--with this alternate, fantastical history of Anne of Brittany Katherine Arden weaves another layered, speculative tale. And, like with the Winternight trilogy and the Warm Hands of Ghosts, the way the speculative and fantastical present, as well as the language, reflect a very specific historical moment. And, again, that moment being explored exists in the in-between of major historical change, here the medieval period and the Renaissance. Anne subverts the idea of the damsel in distress, even as she uses it and others perceptions and underestimations of her to her own aims. This plays with the real history of Anne of Brittany amidst the supernatural, while also offering her a happier ending.
