We discuss how we're using EIFS in remodels to insulate and protect old buildings, and show you some best practice EIFS details. EIFS, or "Exterior Insulation and Finish Systems," is an exterior rigid insulation system covered with a thin layer of synthetic stucco. These systems became popular in the late 1980s and 1990s for various homes and buildings. However, improper installation often led to severe moisture problems, as many EIFS were installed without a WRB. Builders relied on the watertightness of the rigid insulation and the integrity of the sealant to keep the building dry, resulting in moisture issues that led to mold and rot problems. However, If the wall assembly is properly waterproofed and drained, there is significant potential for using EIFS systems, particularly in retrofit applications. As various regions in the country begin to implement code requirements for exterior insulation, EIFS is gaining renewed popularity in both commercial and residential construction projects.
