Dr Mattsson McGinnis joins me in conversation to discuss her doctoral thesis exploring amulet-rings from Vendel and Viking period Sweden.
Dr Meghan Mattsson McGinnis specializes in the archaeology of ritual, the study of pre-Christian religions in Scandinavia, and how new materialist theories intersect with these topics. She received an MA in Art History from the University of Louisville in her home state of Kentucky in the USA. After immigrating to Sweden in 2012, she completed a second Master's degree in Archaeology at Stockholm University. In May of 2025 Meghan successfully defended her doctoral thesis Doing Things With Rings (also at the Department of Archaeology and Classical Studies at Stockholm University) -- a project investigating the range of rituals involving amulet rings, and how this set of practices can serve as a window onto how religious life was experienced in what is now eastern Middle Sweden during the Late Iron Age.
