If you're looking for a cocktail to turbocharge your Halloween, look no further! Invented by Donn the Beachcomber, it was said he enforceda two per guest Zombie limit as more than that “could make you like the walking dead”.
This is the original 1930s recipe according to Jeff Beachbum Berry
45ml (1 ½ oz) heavier Jamaican style rum
45ml (1 ½ oz) lighter Puerto Rican style rum
30ml (1 oz) overproof rum
25ml (⅘ oz) lime juice
15ml (½ oz) Donn’s mix*
15ml (½ oz) falernum
1 teaspoon grenadine
4 dashes Pernod
1 dash Angostura
Glass: hurricane
Garnish: mint sprig
*Donn's Mix: Add 1 part sugar and 1 part water to a saucepan, and add some crushed cinnamon sticks - around 3 cinnamon sticks per cup of sugar. Bring to the boil and stir to dissolve sugar. Remove from heat and allow to infuse for at least a couple of hours, or overnight if possible.
Strain out cinnamon and blend 1 part cinnamon syrup with 2 parts fresh grapefruit juice (preferably white grapefruit juice, but ruby works fine as well).
