The Forgotten Phone Number Where BT Could Listen To Your Calls
youtu.be/FcPpNerp09U
In this instalment, I’ll be telling you, or reminding you about Dial-a-Disc, a music service set up by the General Post Office where; by dialling 16 or 160 on your telephone, you could hear the latest chart hits down the phone line.
This was the original music streaming service: on-demand music streaming had arrived. But Hi-Fidelity it was not. The music was poor quality, transmitted in Mono, with the bandwidth heavily squeezed and woven between the existing noise artefacts on the copper telephone line.
It was expensive, a limited number of tracks were available but at its peak, 200 million calls a year were made to the service. This is the story of Dial-A-Disc.
