Is the UK's Online Safety Act a threat to free speech? The new legislation, which allows websites to filter and remove content, is supposedly meant to protect children, but some are calling it a step towards digital censorship.
I’m currently living in Thailand and I've always loved my home country, but what I'm seeing now has me seriously questioning if I want to return. The government is asking for facial recognition and ID scans just to access basic websites and even music apps like Spotify. On top of that, people are being punished for expressing their opinions online—a dangerous new precedent for freedom of speech.
I've been spending the last year tightening up my online security, only to watch as the government demands more and more personal data. Many of you might say, "If you have nothing to hide, what's the problem?" But as I've experienced with my own card being skimmed, your private data is a valuable commodity that is only getting less secure.
The UK is even demanding that Apple hand over user data, a move that is making me reconsider all of my online habits. What do you think about all of this? Is this the new reality for online security, or is the UK taking it too far? I'd love to hear your thoughts in the comments.
