The Ugly Side of Beautiful: Rethinking Race and Prison in America by Bryonn Bain
A Black male, Harvard Law School graduate, and criminal justice reform advocate, Bryonn Bain details his personal experiences of being racially profiled by police and wrongfully incarcerated. Bain uses his knowledge and experiences to convey to readers the need to rethink America’s system of incarceration and public safety, particularly regarding the treatment of African Americans. Published in 2013, Bain’s book carries even greater emphasis today in the wake of the numerous high profile instances of police murders of unarmed Black citizens.

Project overview
A collaborative project between DeWitt Scott and the Moraine Valley Community College Library, "The Daily Reading Room" is a collection of brief video reviews of non-fiction books spanning a number of genres, subjects, and topics. One video will be recorded for each day of the 2022-23 academic school year. Each video will explain the main themes, as well some of the more pertinent and interesting details of the book. Listeners are welcome to comment and contribute to the conversation.
