This in-depth, full-length documentary traces the rise and reckoning of James Buchanan "Buck" Duke, the North Carolina farm boy with no university education who built the American Tobacco Company into a 90% monopoly, was broken up by the Supreme Court in 1911, founded Duke University with a $40 million endowment, electrified the Carolinas, and left a 12-year-old daughter named Doris approximately $100 million on his death in 1925.

Born in 1856 in a farmhouse outside Durham, North Carolina, James Buchanan Duke started full-time work in his father's tobacco operation at fifteen. By forty-three he was president of one of the largest industrial monopolies in the world.

He captured 38% of the U.S. cigarette market by 1889 through unprecedented advertising spending, secretly installed Bonsack cigarette machines under a private royalty arrangement his competitors did not know existed, and merged his five largest rivals into the American Tobacco Company in 1890.

By 1900 the trust controlled roughly 90% of all tobacco produced in the United States, had absorbed approximately 250 competitor firms, and operated subsidiaries across China, Germany, Australia, and South Africa through the British-American Tobacco joint venture.

In 1911 the Supreme Court broke up the trust under the Sherman Antitrust Act, in the same wave that dissolved Standard Oil, fragmenting Duke's empire into the modern descendants of American Tobacco.

Duke pivoted to hydroelectric power, building out the electrical grid of the Carolinas through Duke Power, and in 1924 endowed Trinity College with $40 million to create Duke University as a permanent monument to the family name.

When he died on October 10, 1925, he left approximately $100 million to his only daughter Doris Duke, then twelve years old, instantly making her one of the wealthiest children in the world and setting the stage for one of the most troubled inheritance stories of the twentieth century.
