![Sweet As - Behind the Scenes
Writer and director Jub Clerc talks about reflecting on her transformative teenage years, which inspired her debut feature film Sweet As.
Having worked on film sets in various capacities for many years, Western Australian writer and director Jub Clerc knew she wanted to make a feature film with her producing partner Liz Kearney, but neither knew which story to tell.
“One day she [Kearney] rang and she’s like, ‘What about that bloody story you told me about going on a photo safari when you were fourteen?’” reflects Clerc. “And I was like, ‘oh yeah, that’s a pretty cool story, isn’t it?’”
In this behind-the-scenes video, Clerc discusses the detailed process of getting permission from First Nations elders to film on sacred land, her hopes for inspiring a young audience — and the pride she felt being the first female Indigenous Western Australian director to make a feature film.
Sweet As is released in cinemas from 1 June 2023.
