A 2,600-ton ship stranded in the middle of a city. A fishing boat sitting on top of a house. These are some of the most incredible reminders of the devastating 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami.
On December 26, 2004, one of the deadliest natural disasters in recorded history struck the coast of Aceh, Indonesia. More than two decades later, the city of Banda Aceh still bears remarkable reminders of the immense power of the Indian Ocean tsunami.
In this video, I explore the famous PLTD Apung 1, a 2,600-ton floating power plant that was carried several kilometers inland by the tsunami and left stranded in the middle of a residential neighborhood. I then visit the incredible boat perched on the rooftop of a house, another haunting reminder of the force of the waves. Finally, I stop at one of Banda Aceh’s tsunami escape buildings, constructed to provide refuge in the event of a future disaster.
Walking through these sites offers a powerful perspective on the scale of the 2004 tsunami and the resilience of the people of Aceh.
