The Truth About Ibn Ata'allah They Don't Want You to Know | Yaser Birjas
بين حقيقة التصوّف وأفعال بعض المتصوّفة. نظرة عامة على الحكم العطائية وكيف نتعامل مع أقوال الصالحين
“Between the true essence of Sufism and the actions of some Sufis:
An overview of the Hikam of Ibn ʿAṭā’ Allāh and how we should approach the sayings of the righteous.”
In the vast landscape of Islamic spirituality, Sufism represents the inward dimension of faith— the pursuit of Ihsan and the refinement of the heart. Yet its path is often misunderstood, suspended between the noble ideals of its early tradition and the problematic practices that later appeared in some circles.
This session offers a calm, balanced, and practical exploration of that tension. We will clarify the authentic essence of Tasawwuf, grounded firmly in the Qur’an and Sunnah, and distinguish it from the blameworthy innovations that must be avoided.
This year’s theme brings a unique opportunity as we delve into selected wisdoms from the renowned sage Ibn ʿAṭā’ Allāh. Some of you may know his sayings well, while others may wonder: Why study the reflections of this scholar? Why not limit ourselves to the sayings of the Prophet ﷺ, or the teachings of the Companions? And more broadly, how should we approach the words of our righteous predecessors—whether Ibn ʿAṭā’ Allāh, Ibn Taymiyyah, Ibn al-Qayyim, Imam Aḥmad, or even a beloved teacher who has passed on?
This introductory session aims to establish the right mindset: understanding how their lives and insights can inspire spiritual growth while remembering that they are not sources of law.
In the sessions ahead, we will examine one wisdom from Ibn ʿAṭā’ Allāh at a time—using each as a lens to recalibrate our thinking and transform our daily practice.
