IQ tests were originally used to identify children who scored near the bottom so that special education could improve their ability to learn and grow. But what about children at the top end of the scale? In Argentina, little support is given to high IQ children, where appropriate programs and services for the exceptional students are scarce and discontinuous, particularly, in the public sphere. Our interview with Cintia Allega, Director of Education Inclusion for Mensa Argentina (the regional high IQ society), looks at how these students can excel and what parents can do to support. The current challenges can lead to a child’s extraordinary intelligence being channeled into somewhat more ordinary endeavors, or worse, criminal behavior. Allega looks and discusses whether intelligence is based on nature or nurture and how parents can work with schools to change the curriculum to meet the needs of their children.

Mensa Argentina: Niños superdotados en diversas culturas
Lo que significa ser "inteligente" o "dotado" puede variar de una cultura a otra, y los aspectos que son positivos en un contexto pueden ser negativos en otro. El motivo que originó los test de IQ fue diagnosticar e identificar niños en las partes inferiores de la escala de inteligencia que pudieran requerir de una educación especial para sobrellevar la currícula escolar.
Sin embargo, a los niños en las escalas más altas se les brinda poco o nada de apoyo, particularmente en Argentina donde los programas y servicios para los estudiantes excepcionales son escasos y discontinuos, sobre todo en la esfera pública.
Esto puede causar que estos niños de extraordinaria inteligencia sean relegados a realizar tareas más básicas de las que son capaces o, en el peor de los casos, incurrir en actividades criminales.
En esta entrevista, Cintia Allega, Directora de Inclusión Educativa para MENSA Argentina (asociación local de personas con alto IQ) nos hablará sobre cómo se identifican casos de alto IQ en Argentina, cuáles son los desafíos particulares que estos niños enfrentan en la escuela y qué pueden hacer los padres para apoyarlos. Nos contará si la inteligencia se hereda o se aprende.
