China seems to have inexhaustible funds for infrastructure development: highways, bridges, airports, high-speed railways, power grids, hydropower stations, thermal power plants, wind and solar power plants, urban road renovations, and access to water, electricity, and telecommunications.

Here are a few examples of projects completed or under construction since 2020 (in RMB, 1 USD = 6.7 RMB):
- Beijing Daxing Airport: 79.98 billion RMB
- Xiamen Xiang'an New Airport: 53.685 billion RMB
- Xiamen-Kinmen Bridge (Xiamen section): 37.271 billion RMB
- Pinglu Canal near the China-Vietnam border: 72.73 billion RMB
- Yarlung Tsangpo River downstream hydropower projects (5 giant hydropower stations): approximately 1.2 trillion RMB.

Where did this money come from?

Some say it's because China has a large export surplus, which was then "spent domestically, especially in the central and western regions, building these railways and high bridges."

Is this statement correct? Wrong!

The funds for China's domestic infrastructure construction have theoretically no relation to China's export surplus or the current account surplus since the 1990s.

Money doesn't disappear just because it's "spent."

After 2003, the money China used to support domestic infrastructure, particularly in the central and western regions, was artificially created—"created out of thin air."

This episodes explain how the money for China's construction was created.

Understanding this is one of the most important secrets to understanding China's contemporary construction miracle.

Creating money out of thin air isn't unusual; China does it through state mechanisms, and the USA does it through private mechanisms. The real difference lies in whether this money promotes real economic development and leaves a material foundation for society. China's true advantage is that most of this money has genuinely contributed to the accumulation of China's infrastructure, while simultaneously promoting the growth and quality improvement of China's industrial productivity, leaving a real and continuously growing material foundation for China's economy.
