As Presidents Donald Trump and Xi Jinping prepare for their September 24 summit, what can new economic analyses tell us about the direction of US-China economic relations, as well as the likely impact of the leaders' meeting?

Join the Peterson Institute for International Economics for a conversation featuring PIIE Reginald Jones Senior Fellow Chad P. Bown, Nonresident Senior Fellow Yeling Tan, and President Adam S. Posen. Each will offer insights from their latest research followed by a discussion of the broader economic and security implications of the Trump-Xi summit. The conversation will be moderated by PIIE Executive Vice President and Director of Studies Marcus Noland.

Yeling Tan will examine the economic security concerns of both the United States and China, drawing on her recent PIIE working paper, China’s economic security growth model and implications for the US-China security dilemma. Chad P. Bown will assess what his analysis of the latest US-China trade data reveals about the state of the relationship. Adam S. Posen will present US policy options to pursue instead of capitulation, despite China's current escalation dominance, from his forthcoming Foreign Affairs article.
