This was kind of a vent but not really...
We had a playing test in orchestra today (which is basically where the teacher gives you a grade based on how well you can play an assigned part of your music). I didn't study/practice for it because my music is super easy for school (I think I've taken my school music home once in the past 2 months). I was a bit worried though because I use a school instrument since the alternitive is bringing my bass back and forth to school every day. And the school instruments... well, they aren't quality. I'm used to my professional equipment because I practice on it and play concerts on it. And it's not that the school instruments are horrible, but they aren't great either and that effects my playing and intonation to some extent. So I was a bit worried about that. Our teacher had the first violins go first and the basses go last, so by the time that I was up class was ending and we were going to second bell. Our teacher usually pulls us out in the hallway to do the tests because she doesn't want us getting distracted by other people in the room, but she had me do it in the orchestra room while everyone was leaving first bell and coming into second bell since my music and such was already set up anyways. So I start off by playing a D minor scale and I screw up the E because my hand wasn't in the right position, but I kept going anyways and second bell was watching me because they don't have any bass players in their class because of scheduling. So I played through the scale and the second half wasn't too bad, so my teacher has me play a few measures in my music, so I do so and it sounded okay...
Until my best friend (who is in second bell) walked into the oddly quiet room. And for some reason as soon as I saw her I just lost it and started playing as if I was at home and was on my own bass, and it sounded ten times better than that instrument has ever sounded when I'm playing it. And then I quit and one of the violas gave me a high five and a bunch of people complimented me. And then I hugged my friend and ran off to Mandarin so that my teacher didn't give me a ling (zero in Mandarin) for being late.
Um... Idk what the point of that was. I've been feeling down these past few weeks, and seeing my friend just gave me new hope. Today had its ups and downs, but that was one of the highlights, and it ended off okay, so I'm satisfied.
